Laila’s Artistic Statement
As a dancer, I am dedicated to cultivating my personal artistry. After feeling as if I was simply repeating the movement as opposed to embodying it, I have tried to ensure that my movement and choreographic process prioritize this idea. Art emulates the music and the body contorts in a way unique to that individual and I love seeing how people express music and how different people grow their style. When choreographing, I enjoy exploring the inner workings of the human mind and psychological phenomena and inspiring a dialogue amongst the audience. I aspire to ask questions with my work and answer them throughout the movement and allow
Still utilizing my balletic background and the expansion I have experienced throughout my college career, I want to ensure that I am constantly moving from a genuine place and nothing is forced because dance should have a personal and deep connection with the movement and the concept. I constantly want to continue to learn and put myself in spaces where I am put out of my comfort zone and I am able to grow and connect with others. The art world gives refuge in times of turmoil and can unite lives that are worlds apart. It connects cultures and generations in a way that constantly leaves me in awe. In this sense, my biggest goal is to expand my dancing past my personal bubble and expand around the world to grow my knowledge. Overall, I simply want to continue growing and learning in this art form that doesn’t have a ceiling as there is never a point in dance where you know everything and I love that about this beautiful thing that we do.
